Movie award season is in full swing, taking us to Academy Award nominations day, which is either the happiest or most infuriating day of the year for movie fans.
For me, it’s usually the former.
However, I’m giddy to see the nominees for The Independent Spirt Awards. It’s a list that doesn’t make me want to punch a random stranger in the mouth.
Among the big nominees were critical darlings “Moonrise Kingdom,” (terrific) “Keep the Lights On,” (a moody, well-acted chronicle of a tumultuous, years-long relationship), and “Silver Linings Playbook” (not my cup of tea, but lots of others’). Collider has a complete list.
What’s so refreshing about the Independent Spirit Awards is that they highlight some terrific movies and performances, ones the Oscars will probably overlook: Ann Dowd in “Compliance,” the haunting Swiss film “Sister,” Richard Linklater’s “Bernie,” Mary Elizabeth Winstead for her tender portrayal as a recovering alcoholic in “Smashed.”
And the best part with awards season is that you get a handy list of suggestions. Guess I’ll have to see “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Safety Not Guaranteed” in lieu of visiting relatives this holiday season. I’m sure everyone will understand.
Winners for the Independent Spirit Awards will be announced on February 23.
