Big news this week for sports fans- especially those who prefer not to get their news- or fantasy football advice- from ESPN.

NBC Sports Group and Yahoo Sports announced a deal Monday to share content across several media, including television and the Internet. NBC Sports Group consists of NBC itself- whose sports properties include the NFL’s Sunday night package as well as the Olympics and the currently-dormant National Hockey League- as well as the NBC Sports Cable network, the Golf Channel, and several Comcast Sports Net regional networks.

The alliance will also include Yahoo’s popular fantasy football platform and Rivals.com, its college sports recruiting site, as well as Yahoo’s highly-regarded investigative reporting arm.

ESPN remains sports media’s biggest colossus, but the deal creates a potentially formidable challenger, as the ubiquity of digital video recorders have made live sports properties more valuable than ever before.
