The ten Best Picture nominees were mostly free of major surprises in the drama category, with “Argo,” “Django Unchained,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty” making the cut. On the musical/comedy side, “Les Miserables,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” and “Silver Linings Playbook” were somewhat surprisingly joined by “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” and “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.”
The directors of “Argo” (Ben Affleck), “Zero Dark Thirty” (Kathryn Bigelow), “Life of Pi” (Ang Lee), “Lincoln” (Steven Spielberg) and “Django” (Quentin Tarantino) were nominated in the Best Director category.
On the TV side, the Best Series nominees were Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, Homeland and The Newsroom, with Aaron Sorkin’s series surprisingly beating out Mad Men for a spot.
The comedy Best Series nominees were Big Bang Theory, Episodes, Girls, Modern Family and Smash.
The Golden Globes, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, will air Jan. 13.
