The folks at Boxee have come forward with an official announcement for the Boxee TV. The set-top box will be available beginning in November and priced at $99. In terms of just what the Boxee TV actually is, well, a “devices that brings together broadcast TV Channels, DVR and Internet Apps into one simple experience.” That summary of course comes by way of the announcement from Boxee.
Breaking this down a bit further, the Boxee TV will allow the user to watch live local broadcast television in HD. The channels will include ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS as well as “many others.” The Boxee TV works with your unencrypted Basic Cable or with an antenna. Another perk, the Boxee TV has two tuners which means you will be able to record one show while watching another.
Which brings us to the next feature — the DVR. This one sounds good, but will not be available for all. The DVR functionality has a cool feature, but that feature is also the limiting feature. Boxee notes that they are offering a No Limits DVR, which means you will be able to record to the cloud and have “no limits to how much you can record and no limits to where you watch.”
That was the good. As for the bad, the No Limit DVR will initially be available in eight markets — Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. — with unspecified additional markets coming next year. Furthermore, the DVR subscription will set you back $14.99 per month.
And finally, the Internet Apps. These will include Netflix, Vudu, YouTube and Vimeo as well as Pandora.
