T-Mobile is almost ready to take on Google Wallet with its newly released Isis Mobile Wallet application. It can be downloaded from Google Play, but is only compatible with phones with NFC chips and Isis sim cards. Trials of Isis Mobile Wallet is expected to begin in Austin, TX and Salt Lake City, UT on October 22.
Isis is the result of a collaboration between T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon to capitalize on the growing mobile payments market. In lieu of Google Wallet, Isis uses a special sim card and NFC technology to make instant in-store purchases. The store’s payment terminals must be set up to receive NFC payments in order for this to work.
Isis users can can choose to use a reloadable Isis Cash Card, or use existing cards provided by American Express, Capital One and Chase. According to the Isis website, Chase debit cards cannot be loaded into the application.
