We have been watching Republic Wireless for some time now. And for those not as familiar with the name, they are the company that is offering the “truly unlimited talk, text and unthrottled data” for just $19 per month. You see, the service takes advantage of Wi-Fi and uses something called Hybrid Calling technology. How the service works aside though, up until now Republic Wireless has been in a closed beta (by invite only) stage. And well, that has since changed and those interested can now move forward and sign up. Or more specifically, move forward and place a pre-order for service and the one available phone.

Republic Wireless is currently offering a Motorola DEFY XT smartphone. The DEFY XT is selling for $259, which is actually $249 for the phone and another $10 for a start-up fee. Republic Wireless is promising that your pre-order will be shipped within the next four weeks. Otherwise, as far as the handset goes, aside from using that fancy sounding Hybrid Calling, it is sporting a 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass display, a dust proof and water resistant body, front and rear-facing cameras and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. That all being said, assuming you can live without the latest or greatest smartphone on the market, those choosing Republic Wireless will get a contract-free $19 per month mobile phone service. Tempting, very tempting.
