Who’d have thunk it? Convertible laptops/tablet PCs looked like sci-fi material not long ago, but now we can already start calling the newly created niche an overly crowded one. Then again, with many of the hybrid devices still in the works, there’s clearly room left under the convertible sun. Let’s all welcome Gigabyte’s U2142.

The 11.6-incher is also not quite ready to start selling, but after going through the usual FCC hoops, it might get there in time for Christmas. If that’ll be the case, Santa will be only bringing this to extremely well-behaved little boys and girls as rumors have it starting at a hefty $999.

The money will not go to waste as there’ll be a pivoting 1,366 x 768 resolution touchscreen attached to a 0.8-inch thick body with a chiclet keyboard and very elegant touchpad. Under the hood there will be Intel Core i3 or i5 CPUs, integrated graphics, up to 256 GB of SSD, 1TB of HDD storage and 4 or 8 GB of RAM. Everything about this bad boy breathes style and attitude, though you might take offense at its slightly chunky body – weighing in at 3.3 pounds.
