Facebook is getting ready to adopt a a terminology that was made popular by Twitter. Starting today, Facebook will replace all instances of the term “subscribe” to “follow” on the website. It turns out the notion of following someone is easier to understand than subscribing. I’m inclined to agree.
The way following works on Facebook will be identical to subscribing. The purpose of the option is to receive updates from Facebook users that aren’t on your friend’s list. This is a good way for public figures and popular people in general to stay engaged with their audience without filling their timeline with posts from tons of people.
By default, the option to let people subscribe to your posts is turned off. To activate it, you have to go into your account settings to enable it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Facebook developed its own hashtag-based search system next.
