The Windows tablet market is still in its very early stages but if we were to pick a name of an OEM that’s got a very promising start, that would be Asus. The VivoTab and VivoTab RT have started selling a while back and now the VivoTab Smart is ready to do the same. Meanwhile, rumors about next-gen VivoTab devices are floating around, so Asus is one busy bee.
While still simply listed as “coming soon” on the company’s website, the VivoTab Smart is up for pre-order from at least two US retailers, J&R and Abt. Both have the 10-incher listed at $499 in its 64 GB variation, which sounds pricey, but is not that bad.
After all, this is a true powerhouse, having an ultra-snappy dual-core 1.8 GHz Atom processor under its hood, but also Windows 8, 2 GB of RAM, dual 8 MP/2 MP cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 25 Wh battery. The 10.1-inch IPS panel doesn’t exactly stand out, with a run of the mill 1,366 x 768 pixels resolution, but other than that this feels like one heck of a computing machine.
No words on the exact release date, but expect it to start shipping in time for New Year’s.
