Polaroid’s new Kids Tablet made an appearance at CES 2013 and I just had to try it out for myself. Tablets for kids used to be pretty disappointing devices, but now we’re seeing kids tablets with some decent specs and performance. The Polaroid Kids Tablet is an example of how a device for children doesn’t have to be a pain to work with. In my time with the device, I found it to be responsive and easy to understand.

Polaroid installed a custom interface on this tablet that displays large icons that kids can’t miss. Some of the customized applications include Kids Camera, Arcade, an e-reading app with 10 interactive books and more. Additional apps can be downloaded from the included app store.

Here’s a video demonstration of the Polaroid Kids Tablet. If this tablet interests you, it can be purchased for $149.99.

Polaroid needs to develop the Kids Tablet into a version for senior citizens — or people of any age who have difficulty holding any of the current crop of “grownup” tablets. That large grippable area around the screen and the big buttons make perfect sense for arthrtic hands. My dad is 90 and has 7″ tablet that is difficult for him to handle.

Why can’t you techies think beyond kids and the “prime time” crowd. Even the sainted Apple crowd is missing the boat on this one.
