There used to be a time when a man’s word was his bond, even amongst businessmen (or maybe especially amongst them). In the 21th century however you can’t be sure of anything, especially that when someone is trying to convince you something is not real there’s almost always some truth there.
So when Mark Zuckerberg denied the existence of a “Facebook phone” saying that such a device “wouldn’t make sense”, not only did we not drop the subject, but we started getting more suspicious than ever. The founder of the world’s biggest social network had said numerous times that FB’s future was mobile, so why get out of his way to convince us the elephant in the room is invisible?
And now there’s a mystery press event set to take place on January 15 at Facebook’s California HQ. Will there be some sort of new Facebook-made or co-branded smartphone on display? We’ll go out on a limb here and say probably not.
There should have been leaks of some sorts until now, don’t you think? We should have heard or seen something. After all, a mobile device built by FB from scratch or in direct cahoots with a major Android OEM would be a massive thing. But maybe we’re wrong and Zuckerberg knows how to keep a secret better than anyone in the mobile business. In any case, everything should be cleared up in around 24 hours, so keep in touch.
