Netflix recently debuted House of Cards, its second original series that’s only available to streaming subscribers. House of Cards has been very well received by viewers and critics, and helps to legitimize Netflix as a content creator. Netflix will need those positive vibes because it just revealed its next original series called Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team).
Turbo: F.A.S.T. will be the first animated original series on Netflix. It’s being created by DreamWorks, and is derived from Turbo, a new film that’s scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 19, 2013. Turbo is about a snail (of the same name) that has an intense passion for speed. Turbo eventually gets his wish and takes on the best IndyCar racer and the Indianapolis 500.
Turbo: F.A.S.T. takes place after the events of the movie and features Turbo and his team as they travel around the world. Their adventures will be broken into episodes although Netflix hasn’t stated how many episodes will make up the series. We can expect to see Turbo: F.A.S.T. on Netflix in December.
In addition to this exclusive show, Netflix also slipped in the fact that it will carry more films from DreamWorks Animation. No specifics were mentioned, but the press release says those titles will come from DreamWorks’ “2013 film line-up.”
This is a good sign for Netflix as it steadily solidifies itself as a content creator. Should Turbo become a hit at the box office, Netflix is bound to get more subscribers who want to see more of Turbo’s characters. This series will almost certainly be featured in the Just for Kids section of Netflix. Once viewers get their Turbo fix, they just may stick around for some of the company’s other original series.
