Much like TV remote controllers in the past, current 3D glasses have the unfortunate attribute of being tailored only to certain 3D televisions.  LCD shutter glasses in particular are designed with proprietary technology that uses infrared signals to calibrate with a receiver attached to the TV, and as a result are very expensive and manufacturer-specific.  Sony aims to change all that by applying the idea behind universal remotes to 3D glasses, and has recently filed a US patent on one pair to rule them all.  The glasses will have multiple receivers installed in one unit and will allow you to calibrate to whichever manufacturer’s TV you’re using.
