Virgin Mobile’s Kyocera Event is One of the World’s Cheapest Prepaid Smartphones

Everybody loves full HD screens, quad-core processors and gigs and gigs of RAM, but not anyone can afford a phone with all that. But, if you’re willing to make a few compromises (heck, a lot of compromises), and you’re worried only about your budget, Virgin Mobile USA has a very tasty treat starting today.

Meet the $79.99 Kyocera Event. That’s 80 bucks off-contract, outright, SIM-free or however you want to call it. The idea is no contractual obligations whatsoever. Of course, you can’t just activate the phone on any network and you’ll need a prepaid plan from Virgin Mobile, but you can give up on it anytime.

What else do you get for $80? Well, not much. A mediocre 3.5-inch 480 x 320 pixels resolution screen, an outdated single-core 1 GHz CPU, Android 4.0 ICS, a 3.2 MP camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1. That’s a big blast from the past, but is it worth your time? Hells to the yeah! I mean, $80 is basically what a decent MP3 player costs these days.
