In their seemingly typical fashion, ASUS hits the market with another convertible gadget today. Catering to the niche of techies who desire the best of multiple user interface worlds, the Taiwanese electronics company presents their Transformer AiO; a Windows 8 Desktop and an Android tablet in one.
Although the detachable display, which then acts as a tablet is interesting enough, the first thing we thought was something along the lines of “wait, it’s a Android and a PC?” Oddly, the answer is yes.
The Transformer AiO is a Windows 8 desktop computer running on a third generation Intel Core processor (i3, i5 or i7 — you pick) with a detachable 18.4-inch display for use as a Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet. What the —?! It’s LED-backlit screen has a 1080p full HD resolution with 10-point multi-touch capability (you can use all your fingers at one time, where applicable.)
You press a button to release the screen into it’s monster handheld mode and switch between the two operating systems, also by the press of a button. When off of the desktop dock, it’ll provide roughly five hours of mobile battery life and it features a carrying handle and folding stand (how about shoulder straps?)
This appears to me as one of those “we can build it so let’s do it” projects. It’s impressive, ingenious and interesting — I give it that. Practical? I’d rather discuss that elsewhere.
