Marvel and ComiXology launched one heck of a promotion yesterday. During the promotion, everyone can get over 700 free #1 issues of Marvel digital comics. The problem is everyone is having issues accessing the ComiXology site and mobile applications due to overwhelming demand. As a result, ComiXology has paused the promotion until it can work out all the issues on its end.
ComiXology CEO David Steinberger acknowledged the server issues in a blog post.
“We expected a high degree of excitement for the Marvel initiative – and had believed ourselves prepared – but unfortunately we became overwhelmed by the immense response,” Steinberger wrote. “We’re still struggling to keep our systems up.”
Steinberger also assures users they will get their comics despite the downtime. For now, you have to put your email address into a special form to let ComiXology know you want in on the promotion. Once the server issues are resolved, you’ll be emailed with instructions on how to download the comics.
The promotion was supposed to last until March 12, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were extended. It really wouldn’t be good form for ComiXology to stick with the original deadline since its servers are responsible for user frustration.
