There are still not a lot of WP 8-based handhelds we would recommend for you but the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC’s Windows Phone 8X have managed to rise above the pack. And when you can get both of those for free via Microsoft’s online store, every reservation that you might have relating to Windows should be left aside.

To take advantage of the deals, you’ll have to agree to a new two-year contract with AT&T, upgrade your device or add a line to an existing account. The black, red and yellow Lumia 920s are all part of the special offer, while HTC’s WP 8X is available for free in blue and lime light with 8 GB of on-board storage.

The discounts are significant all around, as AT&T is still selling the Lumia 920 for $99.99 via its official website, while HTC’s big guy is worth $49.99 in the 8 GB flavor.

Aside from the on-board OS, the two phones have dual-core 1.5 GHz processors in common, as well as 1 GB of RAM and 8 MP cameras. The Lumia sports a 4.5-inch 1,280 x 768 pixels resolution display and packs a 2,000 mAh battery, while the HTC is a 4.3-incher with a 1,280 x 720 pix res panel and a 1,800 mAh ticker.
