When I read the article on CNET, my reaction was “Wow! Really?” I figured the first cell phone call had happened during my life, but I hadn’t realized I’d been only 5 at the time. (Yes, I did just reveal my age. Sue me!)

CNET has a great infographic in their article showing some milestones of mobile computing and some of the items (like talking cars on TV) brought back memories.

To think that cell phones have actually been around for 40 years was eye-opening. And yet, they have become so part of everyday life that it’s almost hard to remember what life was like before them. Watching pre-cell phone TV episodes is just weird now. When I watch an action hero run around looking for a working pay phone, I want to say, “just pick up your cell, dude!” Or watching the X-Files and shaking my head at that monster phone Mulder was carrying. (It’s also hard to remember life before Google. It took me about 5 seconds to find the picture of Mulder and the phone.)

It’s sometimes hard to believe how far we’ve come with technology. From computers that filled a room to ones that barely fill the palms of our hands. Innovations like Google Glass and smart watches that were once the realm of science fiction.

We live in exciting times. I hope I’ll be around in 40 more years to see what else has changed.
