Twitter #Music hasn’t exactly been a well-kept secret. Everyone was expecting the service to release this week, and Twitter has done exactly that. You can download Twitter #Music right now from the Apple App Store. A web version will also be made available soon. If this sounds interesting to you, stick around while we explain what Twitter’s new venture is all about.Twitter #Music isn’t a service that aims to compete with the likes of iTunes or Spotify. It actually works to compliment those services. Twitter #Music uses the data provided by its millions of users to display a list of the most popular music artists. It then breaks those artists down into a few different categories. By swiping across the screen, you can move between popular new music, emerging artists, music that’s suggested for you and music that is tweeted by people you follow. You’re not required to have a Twitter account to use Twitter #Music, but connecting your account will provide you with more musical options based on you and your follower’s tastes. There’s also a search option that will find an artist that isn’t featured on Twitter #Music’s lists. They too will have music to stream, and you can also follow them from within the app.
When you find a song you like, Twitter #Music will play a short preview of the song by default with the option of purchasing the song on iTunes. However, if you have a Spotify or Rdio account, you’ll be able to stream the full song straight from the app.
All in all, Twitter #Music is a music discovery application. You won’t be using this while you’re driving or doing something that requires a continuous flow of music. This is an app that you can use when you want a general idea of what the current musical tastes are according to Twitter.
