HP’s Slate 7 is still on hold in the UK and also in most other European countries, but quite unexpectedly the 7-inch tab has gone on sale in the US over the weekend. Unfortunately, it carries a far from ideal price point, at $169.99 with underwhelming specs.
Sure, that’s not exactly a small fortune, but it is much too close to Nexus 7’s starting price. And boy, does the Slate 7 have its work cut out in a head-to-head battle with Google’s budget-conscious tablet!
Basically, the only aces up HP’s sleeve are Beats Audio sound enhancement, microSD support and dual cameras, while the N7 has the edge in every other department, including hardware, software and looks. Oh, okay, maybe from a design standpoint the Slate 7 is close to the Nexus as well, but that’s about it.
And the screen in particular is terrible, boasting a 1,024 x 600 pixels resolution and a 170 ppi pixel density. But hey, at least there’s 1 gig of RAM on the thing and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, so you could do worse after all.
All in all though, you should probably give it a few weeks if you’re thinking of purchasing the Slate 7, because something tells us HP will be shaving a few bucks off its price in no time.
