Sony Mobile today has unveiled the latest addition to its Xperia smartphone line. Dubbed Xperia ZR, this new handset is a rugged smartphone which according to Sony has the highest level of water-resistance among the line water-resistant phones they’ve released so far.
Not only can this handset withstand water submersion of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes but it’s dust-resistant as well. The Xperia ZR is IP5 and IP 58 compliant. Hence, you can take this on your next diving or snorkeling schedule and shoot full-HD video or photos underwater with its 13MP camera.
Inside, you can find a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5 GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and a battery stamina mode which equates to outstanding battery life depending on your usage. Other features include a 4.6-inch HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, and the usual suspects such as Wi-Fi, 3.5mm audio jack, aGPS, Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA and HDMI.
Aside from a rugged smartphone that you can bring with you underwater, the Sony Xperia ZR is also a mobile entertainment device. It’s preloaded with the “WALKMAN,” album and movies apps which allows for online media discovery — and offline content through a single access point. The Sony Xperia ZR runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Sony Xperia ZR is expected to be released in various global markets sometime in Q2 2013. If you’ve been eye-ing a rugged smartphone, it looks like this handset will be a pretty good choice. No words yet on its pricing.
