Despite not becoming what you’d call mainstream commercial hits, Windows 8 and RT-powered tablets remain fairly pricey. As a matter of fact, the only decent deal we’ve seen of late was for Dell’s XPS 10 slate. The thing is still available for $299.99 via Dell’s online store, but if you want a little extra oomph you might be happy to hear Staples has a little promo going on starring the Surface RT.
The 10.6-incher, which usually starts at 500 bucks, goes for a very nice $400 in Staples brick and mortar stores, which is a lot closer to the tablet’s real-life value. Unfortunately, the retailer’s online store still has the slate listed at $499.99, so if you want to take advantage of the special offer you’ll need to do it the old-fashioned way.
But is the Surface RT worth the trouble? Well, it might, seeing as you get a version with 32 GB of on-board storage, microSD support, a very zippy quad-core 1.3 GHz Tegra 3 CPU and 2 GB of RAM for that $400.
On the flipside, the optional keyboard (aka touch cover) is not included in the price, and let’s face it, that’s the only thing that can make the Surface RT really special and functional. The display is not great either, sporting a 1,366 x 768 pixels resolution, but still, at $400 the quality-price ratio is fair.
