The Galaxy S4 Mini went official less than two weeks back, the Active was unveiled seven days later, so it shouldn’t come as a major surprise the GS4 Zoom has been introduced to the world moments ago. But does that mean there will be no new products showcased during Samsung’s June 20 “Premiere” event?
No idea, so we’d better just focus on the S4 Zoom for the time being. As expected, this is basically a slightly more modest Galaxy Camera with GSM voice support. Or, if you will, an S4 Mini with a bulky figure and an impressive rear camera.
Specifically, Zoom’s snapper is a 16 MP unit with auto-focus, Xenon flash, 10x optical zoom (24-240 mm), touch focus, face and smile detection, optical image stabilization, etc., etc. There’s no doubt the S4 Zoom is Android’s best ever cameraphone, but with Nokia’s EOS on the horizon, it remains to be seen if it can also be called the best cameraphone period.
Sadly, the gadget’s design has a sort of Frankensteinian feel. Meaning it’s fairly ugly for a phone and not so elegant for a point and shoot camera either. It weighs in at a whopping 208 grams and measures 15.4 mm in thickness (25 with the camera lens open).
In the hardware and software department, the thing replicates the S4 Mini by the letter, so you get the same 4.3-inch 960 x 540 pix res screen, dual-core 1.5 GHz CPU, 1.5 GB of RAM and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
No words on pricing and availability just yet, but we’ll be back with updates as soon as we hear something new.
