Honestly, I’m a fan of 50 Cent. When I was in middle school, I called “In Da Club” my jam like everyone else. But headphones? I can’t say I ever expected to see him in the headphones industry — but then again I also didn’t expect him to create Vitamin Water either, so I guess it’s safe to say he’s a jack of all trades. I can honestly say I’m glad 50 Cent tossed his hat into the headphones ring because the SMS Audio STREET by 50 Over-Ear Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones are pretty tough to beat.
It’s clear that the folks over at SMS Audio took a lot of time to make a great product. Just the packaging on the Street by 50 Headphones was impressive. It was like one of those Russian dolls with all the smaller Russian dolls inside. I’m just saying there was a lot to it. Check out of my unboxing Vine to see what I mean:
In terms of the look, there’s something retro about the very modern styling of the Street by 50 Headphones. And I like that. My review sample was in the “Cool Silver” color, and I’d have to bet that Daft Punk would be jealous of the look of these cans. Unlike most celebrity products, the Street by 50 Headphones didn’t have any 50 Cent logos, and for that I was somewhat thankful. Not cause I don’t dig you, 50, but sometimes those celebrity logos make the product look cheap.
Anyways, back to the headphones. The nice thing about these is that they are actually very portable. The headphones come with a nice hard shell case, perfect for keeping them and the accompanying wires safe during traveling. And the headphones fold up to fit in the case, which is pretty impressive because they are quite large. Admittedly, my Over-Ear headphones are usually a little smaller than these. At first, I kept turning around because out of the corner of my eye, I kept thinking someone was behind me.
However, just because the headphones are large does not mean they aren’t comfortable. Almost surprisingly, they’re very comfortable. I’ve kept them on all day. Obviously, this wasn’t an accident seeing as 50 really envisioned these headphones to be a go-to for those on-the-go.
Here’s what 50 Cent had to say:
“I have spent a long time searching for a great pair of headphones that not only deliver great sound quality, but that also are durable and comfortable enough during my extensive travels. That’s why we created the STREET by 50 Over-Ear ANC Wired headphones with active noise cancellation technology. Not only do they deliver the best in studio mastered sound, but they are also tough enough to withstand extensive traveling while providing a secure and comfortable fit for hours of listening enjoyment.”
Honestly, I have to give him credit. I would travel with these in a heartbeat. With an adjustable headband and soft leather memory foam cushion earcups, it’s nearly impossible to be a cranky traveler.
But I know what you care about, audiophiles, and that is of course the AUDIO. Don’t worry, readers, these headphones deliver great sound. With 40 mm drivers, I can guarantee you’ll be pleased with how the music sounds. And with the Active Noise-Cancelling technology, you’ll feel like you’re alone with your music, even if you’re sitting next to a crying baby. Plus, your music is inaudible to anyone sitting next to you. Seriously. I tried it. On the highest volume, I couldn’t hear my music unless I was wearing the headphones. Therefore, they get the Quiet Ride stamp of approval. You’re welcome, SEPTA.
But back to the audio. As usual, I had to put the Street by 50 headphones through the grueling music test that all my headphones must endure. For the acoustic portion of the test, I chose a little Sufjan Stevens because what good are headphones if they can’t compete in every genre? Don’t worry, the Street by 50 headphones passed with flying colors.
Next up on the list of music to test was The Strokes. Obviously, it’s got more instrumentation than Sufjan Stevens, and I needed a quintessential rock group for the rock portion. A+ on that test as well.
Truth be told, readers, I couldn’t resist listening to some 50 Cent. And I also couldn’t resist some classic Justin Timberlake and 50 Cent. An I right, A’yo Technology? Not ashamed. The bass was great but not to the point that I was having heart convulsions, and even at the loudest volumes, the audio still sounded great.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say I put them through my Kanye West test (Sorry 50,) but the audio was great on those tracks so that’s all I’ll say about that.
And the best part about the STREET by 50 Over-Ear Active Noise Control Headphones? I’m glad you asked because this fun fact will astound you. The headphones can play audio for up to 70 hours. Think of all the flying you can do in that time! No, actually don’t think about that, your legs will start to cramp up.
Although these headphones are a little pricey, it’s for a reason. The audio is perfect, they’re super comfortable and PORTABLE and honestly they look pretty cool.
