There’s no use to gander at your calendars disoriented and no, you haven’t slept your way through the first week of September. IFA 2013’s official kick-off is still a few days away, but a number of gadget manufacturers have thought it best to jump the gun and try to steal the pre-show spotlight.
Alcatel is one of these, with two new One Touch smartphones and a tablet going by the name of Evo 8HD going official earlier today.
First things first, let’s see what OT Idol S and Idol Mini’s deals are. The first is the more impressive member of the duo, although I wouldn’t quite call it a top-notch device. After all, its 4.7-inch IPS panel “only” sports a 720p resolution and beneath the hood you get a fairly modest (by high-end standards) dual-core 1.2 GHz processor.
The Idol S does win precious points in the design department, measuring an anorexic 7.4 mm in thickness, and also runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, so on the whole it’s a very solid mid-range contender.
Meanwhile, the Idol Mini sits even lower on the totem pole, boasting an 854 x 480 pix res 4.3-inch display, plus a dual-core CPU, 512 MB RAM, 5 MP rear camera and Android 4.2.
Last but not least, we have the Evo 8 HD tab, which, while clearly unable to pose a threat for gadgets like the Nexus 7 2, should find a comfy spot under the low-end, low-cost slate sun. The list of features is bittersweet (with an emphasis on the bitter part), including a 1,024 x 768 display, dual-core 1.6 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
No words on pricing for any of the three devices yet, whereas in terms of availability we have but a vague ETA for all of them – “Q4 2013”.
