Though so far no one can say that Microsoft’s Windows Phone experiment project has been a commercial blockbuster (it’s been three years and the OS’ market share is still well below 10%), there are a number of decent, nay, solid handhelds built on the platform that offer a pretty exceptional quality-price ratio.
Nokia has the most, starting from the Lumia 520 and going all the way up to the 1020, but probably the most grossly and unwarrantedly underrated Windows-based phone is the Samsung ATIV S. True, this is no Galaxy S4, nor does it claim to be, but it’s an upper mid-ranger… at the worst and can be had nowadays for a measly 260 bucks.
Interested? You better well be, especially that the $259.99 price point is valid for an unlocked, SIM-free ATIV S, which you can then choose to use on your preferred US network. Unless that’s Verizon or Sprint, the two American wireless providers supplying CDMA-based services.
Also, keep in mind that, even with AT&T or T-Mobile, you’ll only be able to access 3G connectivity speeds, not 4G LTE. But hey, keep your eyes on the prize price and I’m sure you’ll find a way to survive without fancy 4G.
No words on whether or not the ATIV S deal from Expansys is time-limited, though for safety reasons I for one recommend you to score one of these 4.7-inch bad boys ASAP. Remember, the thing sports a 720p screen, measures just 8.7 mm in thickness and packs dual-core 1.5 GHz speed, 1 GB RAM, a 2,300 mAh battery, plus 8 MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash.
