The Financial Times is reporting that HTC and the retail giant had quietly formed a partnership to make smartphones:
Amazon is working with HTC to develop a range of smartphones as the e-commerce company steps up efforts to compete with Apple and Google.
The info they provide is awfully thin and doesn’t include any formal release date, unfortunately But I can add that one of the sources claims that the Amazon and HTC are developing at least 3 different devices, with at least one “at an advanced stage of development.” Another source has indicated that the release date is still fluid, which comes as no surprise.
Right now all signs point to Amazon actually having a smartphone in the works. To put it another way, these rumors aren’t inventing themselves (that happens more often than you think). The general consensus of the blogosphere is that Amazon is expected to have at least 2 smartphones in the works, and that both will run FireOS. One is said to be based on a cutting edge design while the other is said to be a more basic smartphone.
There’s no firm info on when we might see these gadgets, but based on reports at Techcrunch and elsewhere I don’t expect it to happen any time this year.
