Nearly a month after Sony began selling the QX10 and the QX100, the company finally released a critical update for its PlayMemories Mobile app for iOS. PlayMemories Mobile is currently required to get any real use out of the lens style cameras, but proved to be a major hindrance. With today’s 3.30 update, Sony claims to have improved app stability on iOS when the lens cameras are operational.
I haven’t been able to extensively test the update, but I’m not too pleased at the moment. Within a few minutes, the app crashed and needed to be forced closed as usual. I also encountered periodic freezes and some lag. It felt like nothing had improved at all. On the other hand, I only tried out the update in low lighting conditions. Things may change once I step outside.
I also didn’t notice any changes to the user interface (which needs an overhaul), or any new features. More manual controls are still a no-no with the QX cameras.
If Sony did indeed drop the ball twice, we can place our bets on the update to Camera360 which should hopefully arrive soon. The Android version received QX camera support earlier this week, and it brought along some neat additions such as live filters for supported devices.
