Google, Apple, Nokia and their respective imminent announcements of new products are what everyone’s raving about in the mobile tech landscape these days, but Sony’s making a brave run for the headlines too, aided by the always reliable and hardworking tipster @evleaks.
A press photo of a mysteriously named Xperia Z1S has been unearthed over the weekend and, while it’s crystal clear we’re faced with some sort of variation of the original Xperia Z1, it’s not easy putting a finger on exactly what we’re looking at here.
Could it be an evolved Xperia Z1, like a Z1 Plus or Z1 Max? Not a chance. After all, what could you do to up the ante compared with the Z1? Boost the screen size? The Z Ultra is already out and about. Which narrows it down to two possibilities.
Either the Z1S is the highly anticipated international flavor of the 4.3-inch Z1 mini (or Z1 f, as Japan knows it), or it’s the T-Mobile-bound 5-inch Z1. The former is much more credible, as T-Mo would have no reason to change the name of the Z1, so brace yourselves, ladies and gents. The world’s first uncompromising “Mini” smartphone might land in a store near you in a matter of weeks.
