It had to happen one of these days. Ematic, so far focused solely on rolling out possibly the cheapest Android tablets in the world, is trying its hand at slightly more expensive gadgets as well. But the Cinema Tab doesn’t go big only on pricing.
It’s also big in the literal sense of the word, joining a market niche whose point not many can identify, yet which keeps on getting richer and richer: 13-inch slates.
Meanwhile, old habits truly die hard, so all things considered the Cinema Tab is still fairly budget-conscious, going for $299.99 via Adorama while sporting a 13.3-inch screen with a not so hot resolution: 1,280 x 800 pixels.
Oh, to hell with diplomacy and let’s be blunt. 1,280 x 800 is really lame for such a ginormous creature, as it gives birth to a cringeworthy pixel density: 113 ppi. And things don’t get better when adding the design in the equation, with the massive bezels making the Cinema Tab almost impossible to move around without a crane. 2.7 pounds?!? I’ve seen 14-inch laptops with physical keyboards weigh less.
On the software side of things, the pre-loaded Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is also pretty disappointing (hello, 4.4 is coming out,) whereas the dual-core 1.6 GHz Rockchip CPU was this close to being discontinued when Ematic sought its services. Okay, I may be exaggerating a bit, but I think we can all agree the Cinema Tab makers should continue doing what they know best and stop with the experiments.
