Forget about quad-core and octa-core CPUs, Full HD panels or OIS cameras. Real men need something sturdy, reliable, solid, capable of taking a beating, something that won’t crumble under pressure. Or at least, that’s how the hoary old cliche goes.
Regardless, meet the Kyocera Hydro XTRM. Or at least get reacquainted with this little devil, available with US Cellular contracts since May and now making its way to MetroPCS as a dirt-cheap off-contract device.
Right off the bat, let me say you’ll never hear any of the following words used to describe the Hydro XTRM: “cute,” “petite,” “sleek,” “light,” “elegant.” Instead, what you’re looking at here is a rock, pure and simple, with armor that protects it against water, as well as shocks and drops.
From a technical standpoint, the four-incher is in no way impressive, but since it’s up for grabs for $169 via MetroPCS, it offers just enough bang for buck. Namely, it features a dual-core 1.2 GHz CPU, pre-loaded Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 2,000 mAh battery, 5 MP rear camera, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB built-in storage and 800 x 480 pixels resolution.
The Kyocera Hydro XTRM is clearly a niche gadget, but it is one that is bound to get its share of followers.
