Ever since the so-called Google Play editions of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and HTC’s One became official, everyone got a sense that the two were going to be spoiled with timely software updates. As in weeks or even months ahead of standard, TouchWiz and Sense-tweaked versions of the phones.
But the reality seems to overwhelm the imagination, as the Google Play Galaxy S4 and One are scoring Android 4.4 KitKat updates even before the Nexus 4. Now that’s what I call impressive turnaround time!
It’s also nice to see Big G at least trying to make it look like it isn’t playing favorites, rolling the chocolaty OTAs to both the GS4 and One at pretty much the same time. Granted, just because the official upgrading process has started earlier today, it doesn’t mean all owners of the devices will have got a KitKat taste by now.
But even if the first wave of updates missed you, you’ll probably catch one of the following and get rid of Jelly Bean by the end of the week. Remember, 4.4 brings with it an improved yet not completely overhauled user interface, a brand spanking new Hangouts app, camera enhancements, better autonomy and several other minor but noticeable all-around performance bumps.
Hot on the heels of today’s rollout, several other HTC and Samsung handhelds are to take the Android 4.4 leap of faith, though chances are each and every one of those will be kept waiting until next year. Well, good thing “next year” is not so far down the road, eh?
