When HP and Walmart joined forces to unveil the umpteen budget-conscious 7-inch Android tablet around, they also introduced a nifty and rather unique concept. The modestly specced, dirt-cheap $90 Mesquite was to be sold exclusively during Black Friday 2013.
But now that BF is gone and Cyber Monday likewise, either HP and Walmart realized the Mesquite was too solid a deal to be shelved, or on the contrary, the 7-incher didn’t make much of an impact on the biggest shopping day of the year.
Either way, the Mesquite is back and, possibly, here to stay. Only it’s 10 bucks costlier, going for $99. It’s still sold solely through Walmart and, technically, it’s listed at a regular price of $129, so it could go up any day now.
But is it worth it? In short, hells yeah at $100, not quite at $130. It’s no Nexus 7 2013 “killer” mind you, yet, unlike most sub-$100 tabs, it comes from a world-renowned manufacturer. There’s pre-loaded Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, a decent (all things considered) 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU running the hardware show, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB built-in storage, microSD support, 5-hour battery and 1,024 x 600 pix res panel.
