You know that $299 Mirrorless Android Camera by Polaroid which went on sale a couple of months ago? Yes, that one we thought was a hybrid of the Nikon J1 and Samsung Galaxy Camera. Nikon has finally noticed that model is a copycat of its J1. No contest, it looks a lot like Nikon’s.
Nikon’s very compact and sleek camera J1 looks very similar to the Polaroid iM1836. Nikon filed a lawsuit against Sakar International Inc., the company behind the new Polaroid, for design patent infringement and trade dress infringement. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the particular camera in question was the Polaroid iM1836 digital camera by Sakar.
Nikon wanted to stop the advertising and sales of the copycat. The case didn’t blow up as the two companies settled before the court and agreed on a preliminary injunction which was issued last December 4, 2013. As part of it, Sakar will stop manufacturing, importation, advertising, marketing, and sales of the Polaroid iM1836 digital camera.
