Now here’s another cool 3D printing application. New York startup KeyMe, in partnership with 3D printing marketplace/community Shapeways, has launched a 3D key printing service. Using KeyMe’s iOS app, you can mail-order 3D-printed house or apartment keys in plastic, brass or gold. You can also store digital copies for use with any 3D printer you’d like.
KeyMe, which just launched in June, is a “lockout solutions” provider that’s looking to shake up what it believes is a stale locksmith industry. It has already been doing mobile key scanning, cloud-based digital key storage, key duplication and delivery via mail order. In Manhattan, the company even offers an emergency lockout key delivery service and physical key-cutting kiosks in 7-Eleven and Bed Bath & Beyond stores.
Prices for the 3D keys range from $10 for plastic to $4,000 for solid gold. You also get a wealth of shape and design options for the key handles, including designs of your own creation and even a 3D model of a person’s head!
