The select club of Android 4.4 KitKat-running devices is no longer so select, as Samsung has reportedly begun updating its proudest phablet to date, the Galaxy Note 3. For now, the chocolaty software treat can only be grabbed in Poland via Kies, but it’s just a matter of time until the OTA will hit other European markets.
And once the ball starts rolling, there’s no stopping it, meaning the unlocked GNote 3 in the US shall taste the latest version of Android in a matter of days. Weeks, tops. As for carrier-locked variants, I’m afraid it all depends on how fast network testers move. My prediction? Don’t hold your breath for an extra month or so.
Weighing in at over 1 GB (?!?), the firmware’s build number is N9005XXUENA6, landing for the time being on the quad-core Snapdragon 800-powered model. The octa-core Exynos? Soon, very, very soon.
Not counting the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition, this is the first Samsung-made phone getting the 4.4 leap, however the regular GS4 is due for its own special makeover by mid-February.
Then come the S4 mini, Galaxy Note 2, S3 and Galaxy Megas. All these updates are tipped for Q1 and early Q2 2014, a tight schedule that, if pulled off, could consolidate Sammy’s heavy domination on the Android décor for a long, long time.
