apple-ipad-2An iPhone deal and an iPad promotion kicked off just two days apart? This must be your lucky week, Apple aficionados looking for a change of scenery. Only unlike Virgin Mobile’s special offer, which stars Cupertino’s newest, proudest, hottest handhelds, Walmart shaves the price of the aging iPad 2.

You know, the 9.7-incher that’s a month or so away from turning three. But hey, if you can’t afford the iPad Air and aren’t willing to settle for iPad mini’s smaller footprint, what can you possibly do other than go for this OG?

Just be warned, it may lag from time to time due to its dual-core 1 GHz A5 chip and 512 MB RAM. Also, it has horrible cameras (0.7 MP rear and VGA front), as well as sub-par screen resolution, at 1,024 x 768 pixels.

On the bright side, it’s cheap. Not by Nexus 7 standards, but compared to the iPad Air, it’s a genuine bargain. Walmart charges $299 in black or white with 16 GB storage and Wi-Fi connectivity, both online and in brick and mortar stores.

That’s $100 less than its list price and 80 bucks south of what retailers like Amazon sell it for nowadays. But wait, you can save even more by trading a used, fully functional iPad, which Walmart vows to appraise at no less than $100.

The trade-in program can also be exploited for iPad Air purchases, or, in the case of smartphone barter (be them iPhones or Androids), for iPhone 5s, 5c, Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Mega 6.3 and Note 3 acquisitions. Between this and Microsoft’s promo, it’s not a bad time to be shopping for a new smartphone. Not bad at all.
