Mark Zuckerberg has just made another large acquisition. Last year’s $1 billion purchase of Instagram is now nothing compared to the $16 billion WhatsApp deal. The cross-platform messaging application which is very popular right now was bought by Facebook for $4 billion cash and $12 billion worth of FB shares.
At present, WhatsApp has 450 million users across different mobile platforms: BlackBerry, Android, and iOS. The app even became more popular than the Facebook messaging app. With Facebook taking over, the number of users could reach up to a billion.
I really hope Facebook doesn’t kill this one and improve on the app like it did with Instagram. I’m excited to know what Mark Z. will do to WhatsApp. I’m guessing it will be blue-themed soon.
WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join the Board of Directors of Facebook.
“WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable. I’ve known Jan for a long time and I’m excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected,” – Mark Zuckerberg
