Samsung is nearly done with Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades for both the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, HTC has its eyes set on bumping up the One mini and max after almost wrapping up things with the standard One, while Sony… is yet to get started.
Bad Sony! And no, bringing 4.3 Jelly Bean to multiple devices of late is not an excuse. But there’s still time for the Japanese to make amends, and maybe even catch up to their rivals. A Polish carrier suggested not long ago the Xperia Z would score KitKat starting in March, and now a French wireless provider says the Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra will follow suit the next month.
Oddly, SFR France has no ETA for Xperia Z’s Android 4.4 OTA, which may mean Play Poland’s scoop was bogus. Even worse, SFR’s reputation and track record with getting these timelines right is iffy. And that’s putting it kindly.
Were we to leave diplomacy aside, we could call SFR a glorified, not very skilled fortuneteller. But hey, maybe they’re spot-on… this time. It’d surely take a lot of resources and guts for Sony to basically roll out three Android 4.4 ports at once, which would however secure them and their Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra smartphones plenty of (favorable) media exposure.
