Marty McFly’s experience in the year 2015 in “Back to the Future Part II” was rife with promises of amazing technology. From hover boards to holographic advertisements 2015 is meant to be the ultimate futuristic society.
Obviously, it’s not. My car has a cassette player in it and the train I take to work would fit right in in the 1980s. That’s ok, because we still have a lot of amazing things and more things to come, including but not limited to flying cars and jet packs. Can I get a ‘hell yeah’!
More impending, however, is an exact replica of one such technology from the film: Marty McFly’s Nike self-tying shoes. Now, that’s a gangsta high-top.
In 2011, the company created the Nike Air Mag for an auction of 1,500 pairs to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research. The auction brought in $12 million for the cause, but buyers are still hoping for a functioning pair of the movie’s shoes.
According to Sole Collector, Nike is delivering. Tinker Hatfield confirmed the project on Feb. 14 when he was asked about the project at Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab space in New Orleans.
“Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say yes!” said Hatfield.
The shoes will have self-tying and tightening lace technology, but will they be Mags? No word yet on whether or not the shoe will be a replica or an entirely new model, but obviously we hope for both, because we’re greedy. Maybe that’s just me.
The 2011 replicas were equipped with only light up technology, which means full-grown adults spent $12 million dollars collectively on light-up shoes, which are only cool for six-year-olds. The shoes are actually super cool looking and I’d definitely wear them on the regular, but I want those functioning laces.
Nike is late to the party, however, on both accounts. Blake Bevin actually started a Kickstarter campaign to fund her invention of the power laces back in 2010 and successfully created the product, which resembles the movie shoe, and will release next year (also right on schedule!). Both parties’ inventions will benefit sufferers of Parkinson’s disease, and that’s the really important point, here.
