A new breed of large-screen smartphones is brewing, targeted at folks normally unable to afford high-end phablets, and one of its reps, Sony’s Xperia T2 Ultra, is reportedly on its way to T-Mobile.
Surprising? Maybe a little. But T-Mo has lately been quite privy to Sony-made handhelds, being the sole US operator to carry both the Xperia Z and Z1, aka Z1S. As for mid-range phablets, they’re still nichey, yet Samsung’s Galaxy Megas recently proved surprisingly popular stateside.
The questions of “when” and “how much” remain unanswered vis-à-vis the T2 Ultra, unveiled back in January and stuck on “coming soon” status both in Europe and Asia. If you’re interested in a guesstimate, based on old continent price tags, it’s $400 give or take, so more or less on-par with the Xperia Z.
For the record, T-Mo’s interest in picking up the 6 incher hasn’t been confirmed by the “Uncarrier”, but the scoop comes from leak master @evleaks, so it’s just about set in stone.
The million-dollar question is where it all leaves the Xperia Z2, also expected on Magenta sometime in April. Worst case scenario, May. Could the two roll out together? Will T-Mobile ultimately give the Z2 the cold shoulder, and wager everything on T2 Ultra’s affordability? Guess only time can tell.
