According to a new report from Amir Efrati at The Information, Amazon could potentially be launching a smartphone this year that will cost “a fraction” of an Apple iPhone. Efrati’s claims come as a result of an allegedly leaked internal document from Amazon. Supposedly, the document was produced by a potential partner and two people involved in the Amazon smartphone discussions.
Efrati says that the document focused on strategies for breaking into the smartphone markets in China, Europe and the United States with Latin America as a possibility. He also says that the phone has been named “Project Aria” and it will likely go on sale this year. Sounds like Motorola’s “Project Ara.” Why can’t these smartphone companies come up with distinguishable names?!
Although there is seemingly no price as of now, Amazon seems to determined to find a much more appealing price point than Apple’s iPhone. Efrati is also uncertain about whether or not Amazon will be working with a partner for the hardware, although he says the company is in talks with possible partners.
