Samsung is really sparing no effort in its bid to make smartwatches relevant, recently unveiling a host of second-gen Gears, improving device compatibility and, now, allegedly working on its first such gizmo capable of initiating and receiving phone calls all on its own.
Christened Gear 2 Solo, which makes perfect sense and has a great ring to it, the “mobile accessory” will likely be able to function autonomously, thus no longer depending on a primary smartphone and tablet and putting a stop to compatibility concerns.
Of course, Samsung is expected to make certain features and use cases exclusive to the hooking up of the Gear 2 Solo to a handheld or tab, clearly preferring customers buy as many of their products as possible.
But the good news is, if you only have $300 or so to spare, the wearable device could be yours soon and functional. How soon? That’s a toughie. Carrying the model number SM-R710, the bad boy was seen visiting India a few days ago, however it was for “R&D purpose”, so it might still be a while.
A few weeks, a month, maybe two. Maybe the Gear 2 Solo will see daylight next to the Galaxy S5 mini or alongside the GS5 Prime. Or maybe it shall really break cover “solo”. Cost-wise, Zauba evaluated it at roughly $205, but I don’t see it selling for a penny south of $300. Possibly, 20, 30, 50 bucks north.
