When Shazam updated its UK application so that support for tagging and playing in Deezer could be added no one expected that it would do the opposite for Spotify, which is utiilized by many of Shazam’s users. People may not have expected it but the free version of Shazam in the UK no longer appears to work with Spotify. Previously, users could tag songs and they would be opened in the music streaming service but now Deezer has seemingly replaced Spotify.
The paid version of the application, Shazam Encore, seems to work with Spotify as of writing, which makes everything even more confusing. Support for iTunes, Rdio, and Deezer is now included for Shazam users even though Spotify is one of the most popular streaming services in the world and worked well with Shazam in the past.
Almost every single user who has commented on the change has not done so in a positive way. Shazam’s forum has been inundated with complaints from UK users who can no longer use Spotify as they previously did and on the flip side, they now have almost no use for Shazam. Some have gone as far as to speculate that the decision to longer work with Spotify was based upon whatever deals were made with other music streaming services.
