oppo-n1-mini“Mini” smartphone standards have really escalated quickly these past few months, as Samsung, HTC, Sony and especially LG pushed the size envelope further and further. But now Oppo takes things to a level that was simply inconceivable back in the day.

Meet the 5-inch N1 mini. That’s right, someone deems 5 inches as the new compact. Will the market agree? Well, how about we put aside the ludicrous moniker and just judge the “pocket-friendly” handheld on what it offers?

Namely, a 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution display, 2,140 mAh battery, 4G LTE connectivity, presumably 1 GB RAM and, most importantly, the exact same 13 megapixel rotating camera found on the full-sized Oppo N1.

Clearly, the innovative snapper is the pièce de résistance here, not just because it can capture uber-crisp standard pics and the greatest selfies ever, but also thanks to LED flash, f/2.0 aperture and a Sony sensor measuring 1/3.2’’. Pretty amazing for what Oppo should ultimately market as a mid-range Android.

With the company’s highly skinned, highly customized copy of Android called Color OS 1.4 on the software side of things. Though it’s technically official, the N1 mini insists on keeping valuable intel hidden, until June 10, when shipping begins in China.

No words on an eventual Western launch, and the make and model of the CPU are under wraps too, albeit insiders tipped us off a while ago on an on-board octa-core MediaTek. Like I said, the big guy has mid-range written all over it. Except the camera, which is as high-end as they come.
