huawei-ascend-mate-2Huawei mobile devices have never been high on Americans’ to-buy lists, and if you add recent espionage allegations in the equation, you can probably get why most upper-class retailers and carriers stateside continue to ignore the splendid, often dirt-cheap Ascend family members.

But the rising China-based OEM isn’t going to let anything obstruct its continuous ascent to worldwide fame, as US availability hindrances are now no more. Ascend Mate 2 4G LTE prospective buyers can score the massive 6.1-inch phablet by simply accessing the newly launched US-exclusive GetHuawei online store, although right now, pre-orders are all that’s available.

June 22 is when shipping will kick off, albeit if I were you, I’d hurry. Shady name or no shady name, the Mate 2 offers fantastic bang for buck, supporting LTE connectivity (duh) and packing quad-core 1.6 GHz Snapdragon 400 punch at a measly $299.99.

That’s outright, unlocked, SIM and contract-free, and the top-notch features also include 2 gigs of RAM, 16 GB on-board storage, a microSD card slot, 13 MP rear-facing camera with LED flash, 5 megapixel selfie-friendly front snapper, pre-loaded Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and a whopping 3,900 mAh, yes, 3,900 mAh battery.

The display resolution ain’t ideal, at 1,280 x 720 pixels, especially when looking at the resulting ppi (241), and the overall package is pretty hard to carry around, tipping the scales at 202 grams. But for 300 clams with no contract obligations, this is one Father’s Day deal you can’t afford to miss.
