Android enthusiasts love the Nexus line of devices, so many people have been upset as a result of rumors that Google would put an end to the Nexus brand. It turns out that even though unadulterated Android will be treated differently moving forward, the Nexus brand won’t be going anywhere. Speaking with ReadWrite, Dave Burke, head of Android engineering at Google, stated that people should not be assuming the Nexus brand is going to die.
Rumors surrounding the fate of Nexus have primarily stemmed from reports about Android Silver, a new “pure” Android program. Google has confirmed the existence of Silver, but how it will affect Android isn’t entirely clear. Burke refused to comment on Silver during the interview, but he at least laid to rest the idea that Nexus is going to disappear because of the Android Silver program.
“People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make,” says Burke. “Android Silver is not something that we are commenting on right now. But the prospect of Silver doesn’t mean that Nexus is going away.”
It is now being rumored that a new Nexus smartphone will be released later this year alongside Android L.
