Sony Xperia Z1 CompactYou genuinely needed to be blind as a bat to miss Sony Xperia Z1 Compact’s game-changing potential back in January, when the little phone that could went official. A pint-sized mid-ranger in appearance, the 4.3 incher shamed every other mini-flagship around with top-shelf specifications that even put it on par with “full-sized” high-enders.

Only two things could have hurt its amazing potential: extravagant pricing and restricted availability. Unfortunately, Sony wasn’t wise enough to address any of the pickles, and the Z1 Compact ended up a really tough mainstream sell. Particularly stateside.

A full half a year after its formal introduction, the limited US release issue is (in part) tackled, though ostentatious pricing remains on the table. At last up for grabs via Sony directly, through the OEM’s online store, the Xperia Z1 Compact costs a whopping $549.99 unlocked and SIM-free.

Granted, in a way, the Snapdragon 800-powered beast is well worth the premium. But when large, impressive Full HD 5 inchers go for roughly as much, maybe 50 clams or so extra, it’s hard to explain Sony’s reasoning behind this valuation.

On the bright side, certain trusted Amazon resellers, as well as smaller third-party retailers, charge significantly south of the hefty $550 tag. Specifically, $420, $430, give or take a few bucks.

Also, who knows, maybe this long overdue retail expansion signals an imminent carrier alliance. It’s a long shot, yes, but what if Verizon or T-Mobile join the Z1 Compact distribution party in the coming weeks?
