Foursquare surprised everyone when it took its check-in feature away from the primary Foursquare mobile app, but an even bigger update has been released that will change the way people use the service. The latest version of Foursquare’s primary mobile app boosts the company’s focus on location-based services, primarily recommendations.
Using the new app’s “tastes” feature, users can enter in a bunch of information about the things they like. Specific types of food, drink and venues can be chosen, and once those choices are applied, Foursquare provides a list of local businesses that may be of interest.
There are dozens of options just for “food,” and when you take into account all the other options provided in the application, there is a seemingly endless number of “tastes” a user can have. All of the tastes eventually come together, if Foursquare’s app works properly, to create the best possible list of applicable restaurants and other venues.
Much of the Foursquare app’s design has also been updated to work together with the location-based recommendations provided within the app. If you are using Swarm–Foursquare’s separate check-in app–you can also check in to any of the businesses that you end up visiting as a result of the recommendations.
