With less than a month to go until IFA 2014’s official kickoff, the timing looks ideal for the tech fair’s protagonists to start teasing their intentions. Of course, Samsung and Sony don’t even have to bother, as the looming Galaxy Note 4, Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handhelds are as transparent as glass already.
Meanwhile, Microsoft seems to subtly hint at the imminent introduction of that oft-rumored, elusive selfie-centric Nokia Lumia, and Huawei has… something up its sleeve. The Ascend Mate 3, maybe? A slightly tweaked, sapphire shielded Ascend P7?
Well, the latter sure fits an obscure promotional image sent from Huawei’s HQ by way of the interwebs, which highlights the number 7 and a sharp contour of a mysterious future gadget. But sources out of China debunk our groundless speculation, claiming instead an Ascend Mate 7 or D7 could see daylight at Berlin on September 4.
That makes little to no sense with the Mate 2 4G and D2 being the most recent installments in the two smartphone series, but it wouldn’t be the first time Huawei execs show off their eccentric sides. Naming dilemmas and conventions notwithstanding, we’re much more interested in the cryptic device’s top-drawer specs, said to include a 6-inch Quad HD display, 3 GB RAM and homebrewed octa-core Kirin 920 processor.
If that all pans out, Huawei can call the big guy Ascend Mate 10, 65, 99, the world will still tune in to the product announcement in three weeks, and subsequent launch.
